Leading Norway union to oppose Sunday opening

Norway's main labour union LO has warned the incoming Conservative government to "think long and hard" before allowing Sunday opening in shops across the country.

"I cannot see that there is a collective call from the country's consumers for shops to stay open on Sundays," union leader Trine Lise Sundnes told VG. "Fourteen percent of the so-called consumers work in the trade. I can promise you that most of them do not want to work on Sunday."

Sunday opening is one of a long list of liberalising measures included in the political platform the new government announced on Monday.

Another announced measure, allowing the Segway self-balancing personal transporter, has also run into problems, with Norway's road safety authority already raising objections.
