Norway's Ylvisåker brothers performed their YouTube hit The Fox twice on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the US's most popular evening chat show.

The performance on Wednesday night came as America's Ylvis-mania reached new heights, with the comedy hit jumping to sixth place on the Billboard charts, and becoming the country's most streamed song.

"Out next guests have the biggest viral video in the world right now," Fallon told the audience as he brought Bård and Vegård Ylvisåker on stage. "We are thrilled to have them here tonight to perform it live for the first time on late night TV."

The two brothers gave a considerably slicker performance than last month's impromptu rendition of the song on the Ellen DeGeneres show, bringing the original costumes from their YouTube video and using smoke machines and lasers to add to the atmosphere.

The show's presenter donned a fox costume during the performance, and danced along on the sidelines.

"Ylvis was amazing! Jimmy Fallon was completely lost during the program,"  Laura Johnson (32) told VG. "During the rehearsal before the program, he said that earlier this week he had had Paul McCartney as a guest, but that he was more excited about having Ylvis."

The brothers appeared in the talk show alongside Alan Rickman, the British actor who plays the sarcastic potions teacher Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films.

The song has now had more than 103m views on YouTube.  The last time a Norwegian song climbed so high on the Billboard charts was A-ha's Take on Me in 1986, which went on to reach number one.

GALLERY: Ten great songs about Norway

How many artists have serenaded Norway in song? Richard Orange scours YouTube and Spotify to find ten great tracks, one of which is little more than an angry stream of obscenities.

Bruce Springsteen's longtime guitarist Steve Van Zandt, or 'Little Steven', is so captivated by Norway's music scene that he set up a record label just to sign up Norwegian bands.   So far he's signed up four, the most famous being the all-girl punk outfit Cocktail Slippers.

"Who knows why but Scandinavia is the rock ’n’ roll capital of the modern world," he maintains.

This month saw Oslo pop duo Nico & Vinz reach number four on the US charts, the second year in a row a Norwegian act has hit the Billboard top ten.  Last year, Ylvis's YouTube smash The Fox peaked at number six.

But how has Norway gone down among international rock acts. Not always so well, judging by Half Man Half Biscuit's sweary diatribe, Stavanger Töestub (with its confusing Swedish accent), or by Velvet Underground founder John Cale's song about escaping the country, or indeed by Of Montreal's description of sleepless summer nights.

Norwegian bands, on the other hand, tend to dismiss Oslo as a small-town backwater.  Somehow, though, it all adds up to some pretty good music.
