The crowdfunding campaign, supported by Catalonia's President Artur Mas, will offer Catalans a chance to send a personalized copy of a book on "why Catalonia should be independent" to the influential figure of their choice.
Mas has already committed to sending the pro-independence piece to 200 heads of state, including German chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese emperor Akihito and Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro.
Catalan magazine Sapiens has drafted a list of thousands of other key world figures who will receive a copy of the "Catalonia Calling" from anybody willing to spend €15 to have it delivered to them.
"Catalonia Calling: The World Must Know" been published in Catalan, Spanish, English, French and German.
The book is meant to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the siege of Catalonia in 1714 by the Spanish, an invasion which pro-independence advocates claim has repressed the region ever since.
“It’s one of the most decisive moments in our history,” Sapiens magazine editor Claudia Puyol told online newspaper Voz Populi.
"The Catalan cause is one of the most unknown in the world."
The aim of this ambitious campaign is thus to create awareness of the historical reasons why Catalonia should be independent rather than the financial crisis which some critics claim is dragging Catalonia down along with Spain.
