GERMANY'S WEEK IN PICTURES

Merkel to mountains: the week in pictures

Though the week has been ruled by politics since Sunday's elections, The Local has taken a break from coalition speculation to bring you the week's best photos. The past seven days feature a fearsome mountain, a dream house and a fake mummy.

The week’s news began on Sunday night with election triumph for Angela “Mutti” Merkel, as her party sailed to a record victory, gaining 41.5 percent of the vote – but ending a few seats short of the absolute majority that some predicted.

That same evening in the Tirol district of Bavaria, a young Chinese woman fell 500 metres to her death from the southern state’s famously dangerous Zugspitze peak, the highest point in Germany.

Our new “property of the week” feature makes an appearance, with a beautiful shot of this week’s home, a fortified church near Heidelberg.

We also bring you pictures from the other big stories of the week, including the mystery of the Diepholz attic mummy, NSA spies and the Berlin wall, the exodus of the FDP top brass, and our profile of opera singer-turned-variety-comic Thomas Quasthoff.
