Puglia’s great grape robbers arrested

In a bid to get their hands on the prized grapes used to produce Sangiovese, one of Italy’s most famous red wines, a trio of robbers from Puglia stole 25 tonnes of grapes from a vineyard in Bitonto, near Bari.

The loot would have netted them about €1,000 had they not been caught by vigilant vineyard guards, Bari Today reported.

The three – reportedly known to police – are 59-year old Gaetano Tatulle, 49-year-old Francesco Mongielli and another 61-year-old.

They are now under house arrest, while the grapes have been returned to their rightful owner.
