Million-year-old mammoth found in Italy

Marco Cherin, a paleontologist at the University of Perugia, led the excavation at the Ellera di Corciano site, Il Messaggero reported on Tuesday.

The team found the skeleton some weeks ago, although only finished putting it back together on Monday.

Cherin was helped by a number of Perugia students taking courses in geology and the natural sciences, Umbria 24 said.

The number of skeletons already uncovered at the Umbrian archeology site speak of an age long before the region was famed for food and wine. Bison, cheetahs and hippos are among more than 200 skeletons found at Ellera di Corciano, Il Messaggero said.
