“When love is pure, gender doesn’t matter,” read one of the placards at Friday morning’s demonstration against Russia’s controversial new law.

Spain’s Lesbian, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals Federation along with representatives of LGBT groups belonging to Spain’s left-wing parties PSOE and Izquierda Unida all took part in the protest.

Hijos de Putín, or sons of Putin – a play on words because of the similarity between the Russian president’s name and the word for bitch in Spanish (puta)- was one of the most shouted slogans at the rally.

Protesters were hoping to raise awareness for the atrocities being committed against homosexuals in Russia as well as encourage the Spanish government to adopt a firmer stance in their diplomatic affairs with the former Soviet nation.

In June President Putin passed a bill which classified “homosexual propaganda” as pornography, with fines and arrests for those making it accessible to minors.

The law has triggered mass global protests and condemnation from celebrities and sports figures.
