The new claim marks an ominous turn for the worse in the battle to bring French back home.
"There were messages from Kisangani prison of clashes between the two," Mende Omalanga told NRK in an interview in his office. "They should not have shared a cell. It does not necessarily mean that French killed him, but there is damage to Moland that is consistent with murder."
French, 31, found Moland, 32, dead in his cell on Sunday. The two have been jailed since September 2009, when they were found guilty of murdering their driver.
