Madrid buskers to be tested for talent

Buskers in Spain’s capital will have to undergo a “suitability test” before gracing passers-by with their sometimes questionable talent.

Budding street musicians in Madrid will have to bring their CV and play in front of a panel of judges who will assess if they are “real” musicians and not just playing for the money.

The jury, made up of members of Madrid Town Hall’s Music and Museums Department, will grant free one-year permits to musicians who they deem to be a cultural asset for the city.

David Erguido, councillor for Madrid’s Centro district, told Spanish daily 20 minutos that “they weren’t looking to get rid of anyone or ban anything”.

“We want to offer the best impression possible to tourists and allow local residents to get their rest too,” Erguido added.

Playing hours will be restricted to 10am to 10pm in the winter months and 10am to 11pm during the summer period.

Busking in Barcelona already requires a permit, with unlicenced musicians facing fines of around €200.
