But Ram Aravind, a student at Chennai's Vaishnav College, was one of four students who on Monday managed to check-mate Norwegian chess genius Magnus Carlsen, who is in the city to prepare for his coming World Championship match.
Carlsen played simultaneous chess with twenty students, drawing with six of them, and losing to four.
Carlsen congratulated the students on their victories: "They were talented. Especially tactically they were good and could beat a Norwegian with a little jet lag."
"I'm a little surprised," Aravind told India's PTI news wire.
Carlsen is in India to inspect conditions at the venue, the Hotel Hyatt Regency in Chennai, before taking on the reigning world champion, 22-year-old Vishy Anand on 6 November.
