"North Sea divers, I'm awesomely thankful for what you have done for me, and for our nation," Aksel Hennie said to thunderous applause from the audience at the International Film Festival in Haugesund.
In the film, Hennie, who starred in the Jo Nesbø thriller Headhunters in 2011, plays a North Sea diver working during the 1980s birth of the offshore oil industry.
After a tragic accident during a test dive, his character Petter finds his attempt to get to the bottom of what happened subtly blocked by the authorities.
He also faces opposition from two American divers, played by Wes Bentley and Stephen Lang, who are known respectively for playing Seneca Crane in the Hunger Games and Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar.
The film has received mixed reviews from critics, with some complaining that the plot lacks sufficient tension, and others comparing the stunning underwater photography to James Cameron's The Abyss.
