Swedish sun lovers lapped up the hottest day of the year on Saturday with temperatures peaking at 31.1C in the country's south.

The sweltering heat topped the previous mark of 30.8C in Blekinge set on July 21st. Both Skara and Munka-Ljungby had highs of 31C on a day where most of the country was bathed in sunshine.

Revellers at Stockholm Pride, which was estimated to attract as many as 50,000 people, were enjoying the festivities with temperatures around 27C.

Saturday night was also recorded as a “tropical night” after it also occurred on Friday.

“In our monitoring station in Vinga the temperature didn’t drop under 20C. It may have been a tropical night in other places where we don’t have monitoring stations,” said Sofia Söderberg, a meteorologist with SMHI told the TT news agency.

In Malmö there were large crowds packing the the local Ribban beach as the heat remained in the late 20s throughout the day.

“Our puppy Sigge just had her first bath. For myself it was my second bath of the year,” said sun lover Charlotta Theander.

Weather experts have attributed the recent heat wave to the southwesterly wind currents bringing warm conditions from south Europe.

However, the present conditions are unlikely to remain with temperatures cooling to 20C in the north and 25C in the south during next week.
