Bear slaughtered at Italian national park

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has called on Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta to quickly find and deal with the culprits behind the killing of a bear in a national park in central Italy.

The brown bear is believed to have been ‘brutally ambushed’ by poachers on Monday, authorities at the Monte Marrone national park said.

The Marsican bear, a protected species in Europe, was shot in the head several times at the park, which is located between Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, La Stampa reported.

Park authorities said "those responsible for this went there specifically to kill the bear."

They added that they are determined to catch those behind it and will this week present a complaint to the public prosecutor of Isernia, the province responsible for the park.

The WWF called on the government to take immediate action. In a statement, the organization said it was “unacceptable” that, in 2013, a bear has been shot. “It is even more unacceptable that this should happen in a protected natural area.”

The WWF said the offense “can’t be left unpunished” and pointed to similar cases in the past, including the death of three bears in late 2007, all of which remain unexplained, as well the poisoning of numerous other animals.

"The situation is very serious and requires efforts from all the institutions to put a stop to this phenomena and preserve this species from extinction," the WWF concluded.

Bear hunt launched in France after rescue cub escapes from village

A malnourished bear cub found wandering alone through a French village last week has escaped from the home of its appointed carer, triggering a major search, local authorities said Monday.

The cub, believed to be about five months old, has very little chance of survival unless found in the coming hours, according to authorities in Tarn, a southwestern region in the French Pyrenees.

Weighing a mere 8kg, it presents “no danger to humans,” officials said in a statement.

The little bear, which was separated from its mother before being weaned, was very weak when found in Couflens, a village on the French-Spanish border.

After being caught by agents from France's national hunting and wildlife agency ONCFS, it was taken in by a person licensed to keep wild animals.

Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy, about 100 km east of Toulouse.

No details about how the cub escaped were immediately available.

A team of 12, including three ONCFS wildlife experts, were searching for the animal on Monday.

The authorities appealed for information on any sightings.

About 50 brown bears live on the French side of the Pyrenees mountains that straddle the border with Spain.

France began reintroducing bears from Slovenia about 20 years ago, despite opposition from local farmers, after the native population was hunted to near extinction.
