The parliamentary committee chair for the intelligence service wants Norway to get to the bottom of whether the US surveillance programme has collected data about Norwegian citizens.

"We can't get into the American surveillance, but we can access the Norwegian secret service's archives and find information that they have got from their foreign partners," Eldbjørg Løwer told the NRK network on Thursday.

Løwer said she feared that Norwegian citizens had been spied on for no reason and would order a review once parliament is back in session in August.

"(There could be) Norwegian citizens in there that has no business being in the archive. It's a violation."

Norway's military intelligence services underscored, however, that they valued their cooperation with foreign colleagues.

"International intelligence cooperation has contributed to saving Norwegian lives a number of times," spokesman Tom Rykken told NRK in an email.
