The father of two, married for 43 years and with two grandchildren, harassed the women by sending more than 700 letters with obscene content between November 2009 and November 2010, the Aargauer Zeitung reported online.
He insulted the recipients and included pornographic photos in the mailings, sometimes adding explicit drawings.
The letters also contained threats and insults with victims referred to as “sluts”, “bitches”, “whores” and “sows”, the Aaargauer Zeitung said.
Most of the letters contained “detailed descriptions of disgusting sexual acts”, the newspaper reported.
The recipients were shocked and fearful after receiving the mail, according to court testimony.
The court was told that the accused picked his victims arbitrarily but many of them lived in his home town of Wettingen.
He noted the licence plates of their vehicles then looked up their identities in a directory.
He assured Judge Peter Rüegg that his marriage was “good, very good” although he acknowledged his wife was mad at him about the letters.
Rüegg said in the 20 years he had presided over the court “I have never read letters as stupid, disgusting, and threatening as the accused has written”, according to the Aargauer Zeitung.
The man appeared to show no remorse for his actions, the newspaper said.
But by way of explanation he said that his grandchildren were terminally ill and that his best friend had died of cancer.
He had been unable to sleep “then it just came with the letters”.
The first time offender risks 80 days in jail if he fails to pay the fine, handed out on Tuesday.
He was also sentenced to a suspended financial penalty equivalent to 15,000 francs over a probationary period of four years.
The ATS news agency on Wednesday reported that he was also ordered to pay damages ranging between 100 and 500 francs to nine of the victims.
