“It’s unbelievable, completely unbelievable,” Lisicki stammered after the fourth-round match of the lawn tennis championship on Monday.
Lisicki, who won the first set 6:2, struggled in the second, losing six out of seven games. But the feisty player, known for her prowess on the lawn, fought back furiously in the final set, stunning world champion Serena Williams into her first defeat in five months.
“Everything is okay again now. Those that know me know I’m an emotional person,” Lisicki, both shaken and delighted, said after the match.
Williams seemed less phased than most about her defeat. ‘‘Come on, guys, let’s get with it. She’s excellent,’’ she said at a news conference following the match, adding “She’s not a pushover.’’ The world number one also took to Facebook to congratulate Lisicki on her win.
Lisicki did not underestimate the import of her victory. “It’s the biggest win of my career,” she said. The 23-year-old will go on to face Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the quarter final.
“I’ve never played against her. My trainers will watch videos and prepare me for the match, she said.
The world’s most famous tennis championship has been full of surprises this year, with tennis greats and former number champions Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova all out already.
