Italy is one of five European countries where cocaine use and requests for treatment for drug abuse have declined steadily since 2011, according to the European Drug Report 2013.
Heroin and cannabis use is also down, with the amount of cocaine seized within the European Union falling by half between 2008 and 2011.
Rome is Italy’s capital for cocaine use, followed by Naples and Milan, Giovanni Serpelloni, the head Italy’s national anti-drug department, said following today’s publication of the report.
“The data from analysis reflects that the majority of cocaine users are in Rome, followed by Naples. Then comes Milan,” Serpelloni is reported to have said.
Tuscany, Sardinia, Marche, Lazio, Sicily, Emilia Romagna and Campania are the regions with the highest drug-related death rates, Serpollini added.
Serpollini’s comments came a few weeks before the publication of the department’s 2013 report to Parliament, according to Italian press reports.
