Hipster Berlin dogs get meaty frozen yoghurt

Healthy dogs have wet noses, but cold and creamy canine noses may be a sign that they've been treated to a doggy frozen yoghurt made in Berlin. Rather than chocolate or pistachio, flavours include salmon and beef.

Twin brothers Roman and Raoul Krohn developed the idea and launched their business selling the frozen yoghurt which they promise is not just a cool canine snack – it is also apparently good for the pampered pooches.

They tested various flavours and recipes before coming up with what they hope will to prove to be a winning formula.

“The wild salmon flavour tastes fishy with a light fruity note. The beef flavour is in comparison less intensive,” Roman Krohn told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper on Thursday.

The paper said he and his brother had personally tried all their recipes – before even offering them to their dog Charlie.

Now they are selling their Cold & Dog frozen yoghurt at shops around the German capital, near Düsseldorf and even north of Bremen.

They credit their grandmother for the idea – when they were just nine years old, she told them off for feeding their dog with normal ice cream, saying the sugar in it would kill the animal.

They say the idea of creating a doggy ice cream stuck and have spent the past two years developing the stuff. It is actually lactose-free frozen yoghurt with agave syrup, carrots, various oils and flours, and the crucial salmon or beef.

Each tub contains 80 ml which is the equivalent of three scoops – and costs €2.19.
