Former Spanish PM Aznar hints at comeback

Former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar hinted at a possible return to politics in a TV interview on Tuesday in which he criticized members of the Popular Party, among them his successor, Mariano Rajoy.

Aznar, Prime Minister of Spain from 1996 to 2004, has shaken up Spain’s political sphere by condemning the government’s current fiscal reforms and tax hikes.

The former Popular Party leader also made it clear he was willing to return to PP governance if he felt the Spanish state of affairs called for it.

“I’ve never eluded my responsibilities,” said the former Prime Minister in the interview with TV channel Antena 3.

“I will honour my duties, my conscience, my party and my country, with all the resulting consequences, have no doubt about that.”

Aznar told Antena 3 it was “pointless” to answer whether he would choose Rajoy again as his successor and added that he felt he was in the same situation as millions of PP voters who would like to see a “clearer political project” from the current Prime Minister.

When asked if he’d ever received any party bonuses while in power, Aznar flatly denied it, declaring: “All the payments I received have been declared and I knew nothing at all about possible handouts to members of the Popular Party.”

His response comes just days after it was revealed that the Gurtel corruption network paid €32,425 toward the wedding of Aznar’s daughter in 2002.
