Teen girl admits to Instagram ‘slut-shaming’

A 15-year-old girl has admitted to setting up the Instagram account that caused hundreds of teenagers to riot in Gothenburg last year, but her 16-year-old friend has denied involvement.

The two minors will be prosecuted for aggravated defamation and could be ordered to pay out a total of 700,000 kronor ($104,000) in damages to victims, reported local newspaper Göteborgs-Posten (GP).

The 15-year-old admitted to setting up the incendiary Instagram account in December last year when she published a call for tips on “which young people are the worst sluts in Gothenburg”.

Within a couple of days, the girl received nearly 1,000 tips and by approving the entries she published the pictures of a large number of young girls and boys along with derogatory comments and alleged information about their sex lives.

The girl claimed she clicked “OK” on most of the posts, more or less in panic, reported GP. As a result, the pictures and comments could be viewed by any Instagram user.

As the information spread on social media, riots broke out at two high schools in Gothenburg – Plusgymnasiet and Framtidsgymnasiet. The crowds called for revenge on the persons behind the account, who were said to be pupils at the schools.

However, the prosecuted teenage girls do not attend either of the schools and are, in fact, not yet in high school.

The 16-year-old who has denied the charges made against her has been linked to the incidents partly through the 15-year-old’s testimony and partly through sms-traffic indicating that she at least had good knowledge of the Instagram account.

“I will not say anything more except that my client denies the charges,” said lawyer Claes Östlund.

“This is a sensitive case and I will hold off making any statements until the prosecutor has submitted the summons application,” he added.

Once the preliminary investigation is made public the identities of those who submitted tips for the Instagram account could also be revealed and they may also face charges.

The Social Democrats, Green Party and Left Party have managed to oust the right-wing Moderates from power in Gothenburg, despite failing to strike a coalition deal with the Centre Party.

Red-green coalition takes power in Gothenburg

The Social Democrats, Left Party and Green Party will now take over the municipality with Jonas Attenius, group leader for the Social Democrats in the city, becoming the new mayor.

“We three parties are ready to together take responsibility for leading Gothenburg,” Attenius wrote to TT. “I am looking forward immensely to leading Gothenburg in the coming years.”

The three parties will lead a minority government, with 40 out of 81 mandates, meaning it will dependent on mandates from the Centre Party to pass proposals.

The three parties had hoped to bring the Centre Party into the coalition, but talks fell apart on Monday,  October 24th.

“We our going into opposition, but our goal is to be an independent, liberal force, which can negotiate both to the left and to the right,” the party’s group leader in Gothenburg, Emmyly Bönfors told the Göteborgs-Posten newspaper.

The end of talks in Gothenburg leave the Social Democrats leading coalition governments in all three of Sweden’s major cities, with Karin Wanngård appointed Mayor of Stockholm on October 17th.

The Social Democrats had unbroken control in Malmö since 1994, after they regained power from the Moderates, who controlled the city from 1991-1994, and also from 1985-1988.
