GDR football coach tackles Singapore team

Singapore has named former East Germany coach Bernd Stange as head of the national team, replacing Serbian Radojko Avramovic, who led the city-state to three Southeast Asian championships.

Sixty five-year-old Stange’s-year-old career includes leading Belarus during the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign where they defeated France in an away qualifier. The country saw its FIFA ranking rise to 36 in 2011, from 90th place in 2008.

Under his watch, Belarus saw victory over the Netherlands and draws against traditional football powerhouses Germany and Argentina.

“The post of National Team Head Coach is always a challenging one for any coach – more so in a country like Singapore where football is the number one sport and whose national team are now champions of the region,” said Stange, who also coached Iraq and the former East Germany.

“I am deeply honoured to have been appointed from a pool of more than 100 qualified candidates.”

President of the Football Association of Singapore, Zainudin Nordin, described Stange on Wednesday “one of the most respected coaches in Europe today.”

He said the German “brings with him a wealth of international experience, ability and track record of building and managing successful teams despite the constraints.”

Stange replaces Avramovic, who stepped down last year after leading Singapore to three championships in the Suzuki Cup, a biennial event organised by the ASEAN Football Federation.

Singapore is ranked 165 in the world by FIFA.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
