Alkorta, an alleged member of the Basque terrorist group ETA, was given ten days to hand herself in after a Supreme Court ruling ratified a five-year sentence for her earlier this month.
Following Alkorta’s refusal to be put behind bars, police were sent out to arrest the ETA sympathizer in the fishing town of Ondárroa, in the province of Biscay (Basque Country).
But when the police were on their way to detain Alkorta, they were met by a crowd of around 200 people barricading the only access to the woman’s home.
Dozens of Ondárroa residents and Abertzale Nationalist Left members had noticed the arrival of police cars and decided to set up camp at a bridge in Ondárroa to obstruct Alkorta's arrest.
Police began to remove protesters by force before finally reaching the Basque militant and arresting her
According to Basque TV channel Eitb, Alkorta claims the only evidence against her was achieved under torture.
