The explosion took place at a rental apartment located on Ripavägen in Skurup, a town about 40 kilometres east of Malmö in Sweden’s far south.
“It was really scary. We heard a really loud explosion that shook the whole building. I ran out into the stairwell and smelled smoke. We’re really shaken up,” a neighbour told the Expressen newspaper.
Police were called to the scene at 2.53am.
“Someone threw in some sort of bomb. Several adjacent apartments were damaged as their windows were blown out. But from what I understand, no one was injured,” police spokesman Peter Martinsson told the TT news agency.
A woman was in the apartment at the time of the blast and was taken to hospital after the incident, although police have said she didn’t sustain any injuries.
“Her living room was totally destroyed, but she was in a room nearby,” he said.
It remains unclear why the woman’s apartment was targeted by the explosion as there were no known threats against her, according to police.
“No shady characters live at the address. It’s a big question mark right now, we don’t know yet,” Martinsson said when asked if police had any theories about why the bomb was thrown at the woman’s apartment.
“We’ll see what the forensic investigators’ report reveals, and we’ll be interviewing people who live there during the day. But right now it’s just a big question mark.”
