Cops stop speeding car with dog at wheel

German traffic police who pulled over a speeding car with a dog at the wheel were relieved to find the pooch was actually sitting on his owner's lap.

“When they first saw the photo it looked like the dog was driving,” a police spokesman told The Local.

“Of course they quickly realised this was not the case but the man was driving at 88kph in a 70kph zone so he was stopped.”

The driver’s furry companion got off scot free, as it did not have a bank account, but the man was handed a €30 fine.

Snapped near Aschaffenberg, Bavaria, the speed gun photo looks uncannily as if the cocker spaniel mix is driving the car. Fortunately for others on the road though, the dog was actually sitting on the driver’s knee.

Lower Franken regional police thought the incident was so funny they “quoted” the dog in their press release on the incident.

“If you let me sit at the wheel, police will take one look at my puppy dog eyes and let you off for speeding,” the dog supposedly said.

Zimmer added; “It was funny, but dogs do have a habit of jumping around. In a car, that could have hurt both himself and his owner.”

In the eyes of the law, dogs count as cargo when in a vehicle, he said. So like a bag or a box they should be secured.

“We’ve never seen anyone driving with their dog on their lap before, but I do remember an English car in which all the passengers were wearing “scream” masks,” he added.

At the same time last year, a rude biker was caught giving the same speed camera in a tunnel near Munich the middle finger a whopping 26 times.
