Three found dead after Stockholm blast

Firefighters found three bodies in a flat in Sundbyberg, just north-west of the Swedish capital Stockholm, after an explosion early on Friday that is now being investigated as a suspected case of murder.

The explosion in an apartment building in the Hallonbergen neighbourhood also caused a fire. Once firefighters had extinguished the flames, they came upon the three bodies.

According to the Aftonbladet newspaper, the bodies of one adult and two children were found among the debris, information which was later confirmed by an emergency services spokesperson for the Expressen newspaper.

The alarm was raised at about 4.30am and the other residents in the building have reportedly managed to take themselves to safety.

A neighbour described for the TT news agency how he was awakened by the blast shortly after 4.30am.

“I heard a noise, it wasn’t really powerful but it woke me up. And then suddenly the ventilation fans stopped working. Then the neighbours came and said ‘we need to leave, there’s a fire’,” said Temesgen Essaias, who lived in the same entryway.

While the explosion damaged windows in adjoining apartments, the damage was extensive in the actual apartment.

“There was an awful lot of debris,” Stockholm fire department spokesman Roger Sverndal told the TT news agency.

Emergency services said it was unclear how the explosion had come about, but the police have opened a murder inquest.

“We have three people dead in unclear circumstances, which makes it a murder investigation,” western Stockholm police spokesman Martin Sjöli told TT.

Forensic officers arrived at the scene on later on Friday morning after the bomb squad had completed a sweep of the area and failed to find any additional explosive devices.

“Now the forensic investigators can go in and figure out what happened,” police spokesman Kjell Lindgren told TT.

Situation ‘unstable’ at Copenhagen’s old stock exchange after fire

Three days after a fire which ravaged Copenhagen's historic former stock exchange broke out, emergency services said Friday that the situation was "unstable" due to equipment issues and a strong breeze.

Situation 'unstable' at Copenhagen's old stock exchange after fire

In the morning, during work to dismantle the scaffolding surrounding the building, a crane’s cutters came loose for as of yet unknown reasons.

It is currently wedged between the scaffolding — put up for the renovation of the historic building that was ongoing — and what remains of the walls.

“It is affecting our efforts”, Tim Ole Simonsen, leader of the operation at the rescue services, told a press conference.

Coupled with the wind picking up, the incident, which has temporarily halted work on dismantling the scaffolding, has made the situation “unstable”.

“The wind is blowing harder and harder, and there are tarps over the scaffolding that can catch the wind,” Simonsen said.

He added that this increases the risks, in particular of further collapse of the burnt-out facade which started collapsing late Thursday afternoon.

Located close to the Christiansborg parliament and seat of government, the Borsen building was commissioned by King Christian IV and built between 1619 and 1640. It was the stock exchange until the 1970s.

The fire began Tuesday morning under the copper roof of the building, which was undergoing renovations ahead of its 400th anniversary.

The cause of the blaze was unknown and Copenhagen police said Wednesday that a major investigation had been launched.
