With Berlin’s much-delayed new airport not likely to open for several years, cleaning the ghost terminal is costing a whopping €162,000 each month.

Overall, the price tag for maintenance runs a hefty €270,000, with cleaning accounting for the lion’s share, according to a state parliamentary inquiry by the Pirate Party seen by news agency AFP.

There is still no opening date for the ill-fated airport, which was scheduled to open in June 2012.

Last month, Hartmut Mehdorn, the former head of Germany’s national railway operator Deutsche Bahn, was appointed to clear up the massive mismanagement of the prestige infrastructure project.

By most estimates, the airport is unlikely to open before 2015.
