The incident took place around 4pm on Sunday afternoon in a residential area in Falköping, central Sweden, as the 27-year-old victim stood barbecuing in his back garden.
Suddenly, a 28-year-old neighbour appeared, axe in hand, and proceeded to attack the man tending the grill.
“He hit him in the back with an axe,” duty commander Johan Ljung of the Västra Götaland County police told the Aftonbladet newspaper.
Soon after the 27-year-old fell to the ground, the father of axe-wielding neighbour joined in the assault, kicking the man several times.
“It was pandemonium. They were screaming and hitting,” one witness told the newspaper.
According to Ljung, the attack was likely spawned by divergent views over the suitability of grilling in the neighbourhood.
“This family, who is known to police, clearly didn’t think it was appropriate to grill,” Ljung told the TT news agency.
The injured man was taken to hospital with injuries to his back and face. The father-son duo that carried out the attack fled the scene. They are suspected of aggravated assault, but remained at large as of Sunday night.
