The south-eastern regions of the state of Saxony were particularly hard hit, according to traffic authorities, after trucks had slid sideways to block many motorways. One truck slid off into a ditch on the A14 near Leipzig, and other accidents occurred on the B95 near Borna and the A4 between Bautzen-Ost and Weißenberg.
To the north, the police counted several accidents between Neubrandenburg and the Baltic city of Rostock, but most were fortunately minor. The A24 near Wittenburg was temporarily closed after a tanker truck with drinking water spun out of control. Strong winds were also causing snow drifts on roads on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen.
In Berlin, the heavy snow ground the city’s morning commute to a halt, as drivers were forced to drive more slowly. The police reported dozens of accidents.
Snow is expected to fall throughout much of the day in the north-east, after slamming northern Germany on Monday. Some regions could see up to 15 centimetres of the white stuff.
