A recent study by Hamburg-based research institute Befragmich.de, found that Schatz, or treasure, was the pet name you’re probably most likely to hear on TV or used in everyday life among couples.

But Germans’ love for animals is no secret and seems to extend to the realm of nicknames, with Hase, Maus and Bär (German words for rabbit, mouse and bear) taking up the second, third and fourth spots in the list of the top ten most common sweetheart nicknames.
The study also concluded that people with less education tended to use animal-based lovers’ names more than those who have a high school diploma or a university degree. Academics tended to stick to the more traditional terms like Schatz.
