Escaped inmate recaptured in Solothurn

The tabloid Blick says the 51 year old it identifies as child killer René G. was apprehended by cantonal police in the town of Solothurn.

The convicted killer had broken free of his warder during an outing to Bern on Monday.

According to a cantonal police statement, the man gave himself up without a struggle.

The man’s whereabouts in the four days before his capture remain unknown.

After serving eight years for killing his baby son, René G was being held at the St Johannsen therapeutic centre for convicted criminals with psychiatric disorders.

The man, who was being prepared for his freedom with therapy and day-release, absconded as he and his warder were leaving a shop, Blick reported.

The warder was unarmed and could only try to retrain his charge.

René G. was said to pose “a high risk to public safety”, according to psychiatric reports.

Blick says there have been a number of incidents in recent years of prisoners escaping from the institution run by the canton of Bern.
