New in German cinemas this week is “Zero Dark Thirty,” Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial historical drama about the search for Osama bin Laden. Spanning the decade between 9/11 and bin Laden’s 2011 death, the film is a gripping look at the “greatest manhunt in history,” focusing on a fictionalized CIA agent named Maya (Jessica Chastain). Though the film has spawned political controversy for its depiction of torture, it has been widely acclaimed by critics for its powerful acting, impressive directing and strong screenplay by Mark Boal, who also collaborated with Bigelow on the Oscar-winning “The Hurt Locker.”
