The man’s body was found at 1 am in a snow slide below the 1,909-metre summit of the Teysachaux peak, police said.

The man was familiar with mountains and knew the region well, police said, according to a report from the ATS news agency.

He had started skiing at mid-day on Tuesday with his wife who was snow-shoeing.

The couple separated with plans to meet up again at the end of the day, ATS said.

The man’s wife gave the alert at 6.15pm when he failed to show up.

A search began, involving three helicopters from the Rega rescue service, along with searchers from Gruyère and Veveyse and cantonal police.

A total of 30 people participated in the search, ATS reported.

Police said an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the accident.
