New lead in Instagram ‘teen sluts’ probe

A Gothenburg minor is suspected of aggravated defamation after new evidence emerged in the Instagram slut-shaming incident from December, which saw hundreds of students take to the streets in protest.

New lead in Instagram 'teen sluts' probe

“It’s a breakthrough in the investigation,” Björ Blixter of the Gothenburg police told the Göteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper on Friday.

Blixter added that he didn’t see any threat for the safety of the suspect.

“But with regards to the suspect and the investigation, I can’t give any more information,” he told GP.

In late-December, a mystery Instagram user took to the popular photo-sharing site to “shame” Gothenburg’s male and female “teen sluts” by publishing pictures of them together with information about their sex lives.

A riot ensued, as hundreds of high school students assembled outside the Plusgynmasiet high school in an attempt to find the owner of the anonymous Instagram account.

Police made 27 arrests as violent teenagers began to attack officers on the scene.

Officers initially suspected the account was created by a 17-year-old girl, who was forced to leave home with her family to a secret address, however the girl has since been cleared of all suspicion.

Since, police have been busy speaking with over 100 people who were affected by the scandal, many of whom are claiming to have been harassed and threatened.
