The car chase across Stockholm’s outer northern suburbs saw the suspects and police exchange gunfire on Thursday. A bullet went through the windshield of a police car, but no one was injured.

One of the men was arrested shortly after their car was found in Bro, north-west of the city. He was reportedly waiting in line for his order at a roadside hamburger stand when the police picked him up.

His accomplice, meanwhile, escaped into the woods. Police launched a massive manhunt for the man with sniffer dogs and helicopters, eventually finding him around midday.

The two suspects detained on Thursday are being held on suspicion of robbery, but the police have not yet given details about the two men brought in later on.

One of the men detained on Thursday is well known to police.

The 35-year-old man was most recently convicted in 2008 for preparing to commit aggravated robbery, and was sentenced to three years in prison.

In 2002, he was sentenced to six years in prison for attempted murder, pimping, and aggravated weapons law violations.

In 2004, the 35-year-old broke out of prison in Norrtälje with the help of armed and masked men.

His sentence was extended by two years when he was apprehended four days after the prison break.

Two men wearing balaclavas and gloves entered the Peninsula hotel, just a stone's throw from the Arc de Triomphe, shortly after midnight and held employees at gunpoint, police sources said.

One of the attackers then used an axe to break into four display cases, making off with items worth a total of €350,000 to €400,000.

An accomplice then drove them away in a car that was found burning shortly afterwards in the suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine, west of the capital.

No shots were fired and no one was injured in the robbery, the sources said.

France's organised crime brigade has taken over the inquiry.

Luxury Paris hotels have been the target of several robberies in recent years, as have jewellery stores and wealthy tourists visiting the city.

In January 2018, three men were charged over an audacious yet unsuccessful jewellery heist at the Ritz, after they were thwarted by locked doors as they tried to flee.

Last September, three Russian tourists were robbed of thousands of dollars' worth of jewelry and luxury clothing shortly after landing at a Paris airport reserved for private jets.
