Lovebirds flock to tie the knot on ‘magical’ day

Twenty happy couples managed to tie the knot at a drop-in ceremony at Stockholm’s City Museum at 12 noon on Wednesday, creating some unforgettable wedding certificates.

“We’ve planned this for two or three weeks, but we’ve been engaged for ten years,” said Helena Eriksson to the TT news agency.

“Eleven years,” her new husband chimed in.

The 20 lovebird couples flocked to the museum for the once in a lifetime opportunity to adorn their wedding certificate with the special date: 12-12-12.

Some of the couples had been planning their big day for months, but for others the decision came on the spur of the moment:

“It was quite spontaneous for us. We’ve been together for 16 years and engaged for ten. We felt like it was time and 12-12-12 seemed like a good day to do it,” Mikael Sandgren told the paper.

Lovebirds weren’t the only Swedes who found something to celebrate.

Ellen Borgkvist from Höllviken in southern Sweden added another level of numerical symmetry to the occasion – Wednesday was her twelfth birthday.

She was planning to mark the special occasion with a family dinner.

“It’s pretty cool. I’ve got to choose the restaurant,” she told Expressen.

Since January 1st in 2001, couples have madly rushed to tie the knot on each annual so-called magical date, although it’s bad news for anyone who missed out this year.

The next magical date isn’t until January 1st – 2101 – almost 90 years away.
