A lucky punter beat the French record for a Euromillions lottery haul on Tuesday, winning a staggering €169.8 million ($216 million), enough to buy nearly four tonnes of gold.

The sole winner of the draw beats the former French record, won by a man in the northwestern Calvados area last year, by over seven million euros.

The holder of the seven lucky numbers is unlikely to be too upset about trailing the British couple who scooped the highest ever Euromillions jackpot of €190 million in August.

Organisers La Francaise des Jeux (FDJ) did not say what part of the country Tuesday's winner was from.

Whoever it is will, if they get round to claiming their prize, instantly become the 221st richest French person, according to Challenge magazine's rich list. The winner has 60 days to claim the winnings.
