23-year-old Josefin Olofsson and 29-year-old Sonnie Gustavsson staged their wedding, but not as we know it, after having been inspired by an episode of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”.
“We thought it was very romantic about beating hearts and a battle for each other. We really liked it, that’s why we want to do this,” Olofsson told Reuters.
The pair exchanged their vows, swearing to unite against their enemies and pledging to cling on, in Klingon – a throaty drawl spoken by the Star Trek warrior race of the same name.
Sockertopp and Gustavsson were resplendent in their red robes, black manes, prosthetic foreheads and their skin a mildly orange hue.
The service, the first Klingon nuptials in the UK, was conducted at the “Destination Star Trek London” event, which will see some 17,000 “trekkies” beam in to London’s ExCel centre over the weekend.
The inter-galactic proceedings were completed by celebrant Peter Whyllie with a cry of “yIn, batIh, Qapla’!”, which translates as life, honour, success.
The service was the second wedding for the couple in two days, after the legal formalities were completed at a registry office in Sweden on Thursday.
The newlyweds will spend their honeymoon at the London convention before returning to a life in Sweden, and a galaxy not too far away.
