Pensioner dies in wrong-way collision

Two people were injured, one seriously, after an 87-year-old man drove a car in the wrong direction on a ring road encircling Bordeaux.

The elderly driver was killed after his vehicle struck another car head on Sunday night at a section of the motorway near Bouliac, southeast of Bordeaux, according to the Sud-Ouest website.

His vehicle flipped over from the force of the collision.

One of the occupants of the other car, a 56-year-old man, was seriously injured in the crash and remains in a Bordeaux hospital.
The other victim, a 53-year-old woman, was also taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

It is not known why the pensioner, a resident of the nearby suburb of Cenon, was driving in the wrong lane.

The motorway was closed until 1 am on Monday while emergency service crews cleared the wreckage and examined the crash site.
