“Some of his tyres were four or five years older than the driver himself,” police in the western German district of Mettmann said in a statement.
Traffic safety police stopped the 20-year-old man on Monday as part of its increased checks of British tarmac layers operating in the Hilden area near Düsseldorf.
The police said they had been receiving more and more reports of British tarmac layers operating in the area, bullying customers into paying exorbitant prices for shoddy work. This has prompted increased vigilance on the part of traffic officers.
Officers stopped the 20-year-old in his truck, which had a trailer attached to the back. They said the vehicle did not look roadworthy, and so took it to an inspection depot, where 38 problems were found, including significant steering and braking defects that made the vehicle and trailer a danger to traffic.
Not only did the brakes on the trailer completely fail to function – the tyres were described as a “real highlight” for their historical value.
