Driver tries to run down refugee kids twice

A motorist has tried to run over refugee children on two separate occasions in central Sweden, forcing local authorities to report the incidents to police.

Both incidents took place out the front of Solglimten, a refugee care facility in Älvdalen for children and youths, arriving to Sweden alone.

“Now it’s happened on two occasions. So we’ve now reported the incidents to the police,” said Mathias Jones, head of the facility, to the Dalarnas Tidning newspaper.

Both the car and the driver are known, according to the paper.

“We know that people are giving looks and pointing fingers, but there’s not much we can do. But now a car has driven at full speed at our youths twice, so it’s clearly more serious.”

The most recent attempted attack occurred a week ago

“We have really pleasant youths and it’s unacceptable that they should experience being threatened or needing to be saved,” Jones said.

To combat the problems, both Jones and a fellow programme coordinator intend to visit various schools and workplaces in the area to discuss the situation.

“Hopefully the knowledge will create a better understanding for the young people’s situation and our work,” Jones told the paper.

Älvdalen has an agreement with the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket) to accept ten unaccompanied refugee children and youths, in a programme that is reimbursed by the board.
