Hollande was given a summary of the document being developed to pitch to Unesco during a visit to the Châlons-en-Champagne fair on Friday.
He declared he would support the project for the “hillsides, houses and cellars” of champagne to become a World Heritage site.
The region’s candidacy dossier, which has been seven years in the making, is being compiled by the “Champagne Landscape” association on behalf of the five counties and the 319 official champagne making sites.
Pierre Cheval, head of the Champagne Landscape association, said: “I am brimming with joy. The is a big step towards national recognition for our candidature.”
