The man, a 25-year-old, named only as Driss O by the authorities, is suspected along with his 24-year-old girlfriend and another 31-year-old accomplice to have taken the man, 26, from his flat in the 14th arrondissement of Marseilles last week.
The man allegedly owed Driss O thousands of euros in connection with drugs trafficking.
His kidnappers forced him into the boot of a car, threatening him with a gun, and drove to a nearby town where he managed to escape, only to get caught again later.
He then successfully escaped a second time and immediately alerted police.
Driss O was already known to police for violent acts. In January this year they found his car full of Kalashnikov rifles but were unable to track him down.
All three kidnappers are currently in prison.
