Customs officers arrested a man, presumed to be of Somali origin, as he was coming out of a car park in the 10th arrondissement of the capital last week. They found 140 kilograms of khat in his car.
He told the police the drug had come from Holland, and he was to send it via the postal system to the United States.
Khat is an amphetamine-like drug grown and used mainly in the Horn of Africa. When chewed it is said to have euphoric effects.
The drug is illegal in France, Holland and Amercia, but legal in other European countries, including the United Kingdom.
