Customs authorities in Ørje, south-eastern Norway, found 18,708 litres of beer and 522 litres of spirits when they pulled over a Polish-registered Mercedes truck on June 3rd.
The driver had told officials the vehicle was loaded with 24 tonnes of juice.
Sunday’s haul was second only to the record set in Halden in August 2003, when the authorities seized 28,226 litres of beer.
In September 2011, 17,962 litres of beer were confiscated in Kongsvinger, a boozy find that now slips into third place in the all-time smuggling list.
