The Gotthard rail link between Italy and Switzerland is likely to be closed for at least the next three days as a result of the accident, Swiss rail operator SBB said in a statement.
The landslide, which occurred shortly before 9am, sent rocks crashing onto the railway line at Gurtnellen in Canton Uri.
There were no trains on the line at the time of the accident.
