Pensioner awakes from coma after teens’ attack

A 61-year-old man has awoken from a coma over two months after he was attacked by a gang of teenage boys in Gothenburg.

Seven teenage boys remain suspected of having carried out the brutal assault on Kortedala Torg on March 18th.

Prosecutor Carl-Henrik Andersson is not however counting on being able to interview the man in advance of the boys’ trial.

“I have the impression that (he) might be able to attend. We don’t think he’ll be addressing the district court though,” Andersson told the local Göteborgs-Posten daily.

The man, named only as Carl-Eric and described as a pensioner, was held in a coma until doctors awoke him this week. It is as yet too early to determine his physical condition.

It has been established however that due to his serious head injuries he will not be able to make a full recovery.

“He remains at the hospital. A gradual improvement has been noted, but there is a ceiling for his progress,” a relative of the man told the newspaper.

“Carl-Eric it seems will not be capable of taking care of himself in the future.”

The seven teenagers are expected to be charged towards the end of June, with a district court trial not expected until after the summer.
