Stockholm police were in hot pursuit of three men armed with an axe and a pistol who attempted to rob a money transport vehicle outside a galleria in the chic Stockholm district of Östermalm around lunchtime on Monday.

“We still don’t know if they managed to get something from the vehicle or not. No one was hurt,” said Catharina Järping of the Stockholm police to news agency TT.

The robbers attacked the vehicle around 11.20am on Monday, threatening the guard with both an axe and a pistol after he had parked the van near Swedbank.

The robbers then made their getaway in a Volvo. The vehicle was dumped nearby and the robbers changed cars a few streets away, where a third person waiting in a Mercedes picked them up.

Despite the car change, the perpetrators were discovered again by the pursuing police a bit further out of the city centre.

“They spotted the vehicle and bumped into it to try to stop the car,” Järping told TT.

But somehow the robbers still managed to escape the officers and dumped the smashed up car in the Stockholm suburb of Örnsberg, reported daily Aftonbaldet.

From there on, the police have no traces of the gang, despite searching the area by helicopter.

A large scale police search of the area was launched, with some 30 patrol cars involved in the action.

According to police they are grateful for any information that the public might have about the incident, and they are currently talking to witnesses to the event.

Axe-wielding robbers steal €400k of jewels from luxury Paris hotel

Two men wearing balaclavas and gloves entered the Peninsula hotel, just a stone's throw from the Arc de Triomphe, shortly after midnight and held employees at gunpoint, police sources said.

One of the attackers then used an axe to break into four display cases, making off with items worth a total of €350,000 to €400,000.

An accomplice then drove them away in a car that was found burning shortly afterwards in the suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine, west of the capital.

No shots were fired and no one was injured in the robbery, the sources said.

France's organised crime brigade has taken over the inquiry.

Luxury Paris hotels have been the target of several robberies in recent years, as have jewellery stores and wealthy tourists visiting the city.

In January 2018, three men were charged over an audacious yet unsuccessful jewellery heist at the Ritz, after they were thwarted by locked doors as they tried to flee.

Last September, three Russian tourists were robbed of thousands of dollars' worth of jewelry and luxury clothing shortly after landing at a Paris airport reserved for private jets.
