The 64-year-old German was riding her bike with her husband and some other tourists on the Spanish island, when she was hit by a car and smashed against a tree. She died on the spot.
“The cyclists were riding perfectly correctly. The driver first overtook the husband really closely, and then hit the woman,” a witness told Bild newspaper.
And although the driver initially stopped, he did not get out of the car, but accelerated away and disappeared, eyewitnesses said.
The regional news website Ultimahora.es reported on Monday afternoon that a Spanish criminal police inspector had been arrested, suspected of manslaughter, drunk driving and fleeing an accident.
His colleague who was also drunk and also in the car, and was arrested on suspicion of failure to render assistance.
The Majorcan police said an investigation would be conducted. The driver was reportedly not on duty at the time of the accident.
