Wanted man takes sleeping couple hostage

A wanted man took an unsuspecting couple hostage late Sunday night after entering their flat as they slept in an attempt to evade capture by police in the west Stockholm suburb of Bromma.

The drama unfolded when police attempted to arrest the man, who was wanted for a number of serious crimes.

But when police arrived at the apartment building in Bromma where the man was staying, he locked himself in his flat.

As police worked to open the door, the suspect managed to flee by climbing from his fifth-floor balcony to that of the neighbouring apartment.

“There he took a couple hostage,” Stockholm police spokesperson Stefan Nordenmark told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

The shocked couple then found themselves trapped in their own apartment by the man for the next two hours as police worked to find a solution to the hostage situation.

Police finally decided to carry out a raid on the apartment.

“We were forced to go in fast and use a flash grenade which doesn’t cause injury, but rather bangs and flashes in order to paralyze the perpetrator,” said Nordemark.

“We chose not to wait for a negotiator, but rather take the offensive to avoid taking any risks.”

The wanted man subsequently gave up after police entered the flat and the couple, while shaken, was unharmed in the incident.

“It’s not every day that something like this happens,” Nordemark told Aftonbladet.

The man is now in custody, although police refused to elaborate on what crimes the man is suspected of committing.

“But he’s not a nice guy, if I can put it that way,” said Nordemark.

Swiss hostage ‘killed by jihadis in Mali’: ministry

A Swiss woman being held hostage in Mali "was apparently killed by kidnappers... about a month ago", Bern's foreign ministry said in a statement Friday.

“It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of our fellow citizen,” foreign affairs chief Ignazio Cassis said, adding that “I condemn this cruel act and express my deepest sympathy to the relatives”.

Switzerland did not release the name of the hostage who had been killed, but said they had been held by the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an alliance comprising several jihadist groups aligned to al-Qaeda that has claimed responsibility for some of the biggest attacks in the Sahel region.

The foreign ministry (DFAE) said that “information about the killing was obtained by the French authorities from the recently released French hostage” Sophie Petronin, who returned to France on Friday after being freed by the Malian insurgents following almost four years in captivity.

Swiss authorities “are making every effort to find out more about the circumstances of the killing and the whereabouts of the remains,” the DFAE said, adding  that it “demands handing over” of the hostage's body.
