Sweden to reject Denmark’s climate plans

Sweden will be going against Denmark's attempt to force all EU countries to decrease energy use. According to Sweden's minister for energy, Anna-Karin Hatt, a reduced usage would damage the country's high-energy industries - mines, steel and paper.

“The most important thing is to ensure that we become more energy efficient, not that we set a maximum level for energy use,” she said to Sveriges Radio (SR).

Her Danish colleague and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (Naturskyddsföreningen) are both critical of Sweden’s stance on the matter.

The energy plan, recently clubbed through in Denmark, has been saluted as historic for the country. As early as 2020, Danes will be receiving roughly half of their electric supply from wind power, according to Danish environmental minister Martin Lidegaard.

The plan is very detailed, and includes financing for phasing out oil burners, and expanding the charging station network for electric cars.

“This energy deal confirms that Denmark now has Europe’s most ambitious climate policies. And now it’s not just a bunch of fancy goals, but also a clear plan for the measures that will take us there,” John Nordbo, head of environmental issues at organization WWF in Denmark, told news agency Ritzau.
